What's so wrong with gay marriage anyway?
If the increasing number of political TV ads and automated phone calls are any indication, the election is quickly approaching. And, on November 4, Californians will have a host of important choices placed before them on their ballots. Everything from candidates of change to pitbulls with lipstick!
Pastors and churches are prevented from taking public positions regarding political parties and candidates. Surely, partisan politics have no place in our country's religious dialogue.
But there are no such prohibitions (currently, at least) regarding non-partisan propositions which deal with moral issues such as abortion or gay marriage. In fact, we have an obligation to speak to the issues of our day and to be, as Scripture commands, the "salt and light" for our culture.
This weekend we'll be looking at one of the most controversial issues of our day ... gay marriage. The homosexual community purports that loving couples should be allowed to marry regardless of their gender makeup. The opposing viewpoint suggests that redefining marriage in this way would be detrimental to society.
What should our Christian response be to this issue? What is God's perspective on marriage? And how can we affirm God's definition of marriage, hold to God's standard for sexual purity, continually emphasize mercy and forgiveness, follow Jesus' model in relationship with those ostracized, and above all be loving?
God's Word is as relevant for us today as it was for its original readers. If you can, please join us on Saturday for this important and timely study.
